Description of Drilling Operation Manager

Job Function:
Responsible for all exploration drilling and well testing operations related to project including well and testing design, execution at well site and coordination with joint partner management. Responsible for operational HSE elements of the project, compliance with Company’s policies, standards and procedures, operational integrity, resource allocation, and monitoring of performance objectives.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
• Responsible for operational planning, executing, monitoring, optimizing, and reporting on all drilling and well testing
• Insure all Company HSE standards and policies are met and all incidents are reported and managed
• Manage and forecast with respect to equipment, personnel needs, performance issues, improvement areas within the project
• Utilize the Quality Management Systems ensuring that procedures and processes are adhered to
• Ensure peer reviews and After Action Reviews (AAR) are completed for all drilling and well testing operations
• Ensure operations personnel training (HSE, Compliance, technical and corporate competency) is planned and executed
• Track and report Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) for drilling and well testing operations
• Resolve difficult and unusual problems which could otherwise delay drilling progress and make decisions under emergency operating conditions to solve problems
• Reduce contractual risk related to penalties, lost in hole, or other additional costs
• Review and approve well design and programs
• Evaluate efficiency of operation, plan and schedule and implement improvements where needed
• Ensure Company operations are executed in compliance with company’s Business Code of Conduct and HSE standards to safeguard company interests as to cost and safety

Skills required for Drilling Operation Manager

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Strong leadership skills in a diverse geographic, cultural, and academic environment
• Strong knowledge and understanding of drilling and well testing operations as well as HSE, contracts, operational logistics and support
• Extensive knowledge of well control principles and best practices
• Possess the ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally
• Effective time management and strong organizational skills - must be able to balance competing priorities, complex situations and deadlines
• Competency to plan, problem solve, organize, direct and control
• Competency in utilization of computers and skilled application of Microsoft office portfolio and project management software
• Proven understanding and application of continuous improvement processes
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be proficient in English
• Strong budgetary and business acumen

Qualification and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited university (or equivalent) and previous oil industry experience
• Minimum 15 years in petroleum industry with engineering and operations experience associated with drilling integrated services and multi-service contracts preferred
• At least 3 years working as Drilling Superintendent or similar position
• Experience in exploration drilling and well testing operations with emphasis on jack-up drilling unit operations including lost circulation, high pressure, high temperature and salt dome drilling
• Extensive knowledge of all drilling technologies and services
• Work experience with or interfacing with National Oil Companies preferred
Remarks Working Conditions:
• Office based in Khartoum with periodic visits to wellsite
• Resident status, 70 day on/ 20 days off
